What's in the news right now about an environmentally sound, socially responsible and economically viable beef value chain?

Executive Director's Message:

For just over a year now we have been running webinars, and these have provided a lot of helpful insights into a range of subjects. In the meantime, our working groups have also been busy with the three goals, in particular.

Some members have asked for a primer in greenhouse gas emissions and the associated areas of metrics and methodologies, both related to emissions and to carbon sequestration in the soil.

"Greenhouse Gas 101"

Monday, May 17, 2021
3:00 p.m. Central U.S./Canada Time

Please Save the Date -- more information to follow

We decided that instead of the normal GHG working group meeting in May we would run a GHG 101 call for those members who feel that terminology and discussions tend to get confusing when talking about greenhouse gases and all things related to climate.

We will aim to have both English and Spanish native speakers who can cover the various aspects clearly and concisely, with translation. If you are already a seasoned veteran of life cycle analyses and are comfortable discussing how to account for carbon sequestered in the soil, this may not be for you.

If however your eyes glaze over when people start talking about tier one vs tier three emission factors, GWP* vs GWP100 or carbon accounting for permanent sequestration, this may be of interest.

All of us need to keep abreast of developments in climate accounting and what is taking place in the world of emission and LCAs for food production. It is an area with a particularly rich set of jargon that it is useful to be familiar with. This is not part of our regular webinar series, but will be in place of the GHG working group call originally scheduled on May 10th.

This month’s webinar will be a final presentation of the goals. Each of the drafting groups will explain the changes that have been made in response to the comments received on the first draft and the reasoning behind those changes.

It will be a good moment to understand exactly how the final goals have developed over the eight months since we started drafting them, and in particular, how we have dealt with questions, comments and concerns from members.

As the comments received have been many and varied, it has not always been possible to accommodate them all in the revised drafts, because in some cases they conflicted with each other. As always, compromise has been required, but I feel it has been a robust process and the feedback from members has been instrumental in improving the drafts.

The Significance of Animal Protein

June 24, 2021

Please save the date. More info to come.

Finally, in June we will hold a webinar about the important role of animal sourced foods in the food system. Clearly this relates largely to the ongoing discussions in the UN Food Systems Summit, but will be a good opportunity for GRSB members to catalogue talking points that can be used in discussions or in social media posts when you are talking about the role of beef in a thriving food system.

We recognise the important role of crops and their interaction with livestock systems as we also recognise the essential contribution that grasslands and crop by-products play in animal feed and therefore also human nutrition.

It’s important that people realise the level of complementarity between livestock and cropping systems, both in terms of how they cycle nutrients between them, but also how they provide a balance of nutrition for people.

For those who are looking for clear explanations on GHGs, the UC Davis explainers are a good place to start: Clear Center Explainers

The World Bank also provides a self paced GHG accounting 101 course online: GHG ACCOUNTING 101

Thanks,
